We’ve been looking for a travel trailer sofa replacement for our little camper (14ft Millard Caravan… it’s an Aussie brand). The U-shaped bench seats are not very comfortable. And since the storage underneath them is hard to get to, we barely use it.
What we really need is a sofa! One that reclines would be AWESOME, but I might be dreaming. But if I could have storage built in, I’d be one happy camper!
The search is on! I’ve found some different types of travel trailer sofa replacements, plus manufacturers and suppliers that make couches for RVs.
Here are some of the top camper sofa replacement options I’ve found.
RV Jackknife Sofas
The jackknife RV sofa beds are one of the most common sofas in an RV. Their simple design does not have too much bulk, making it easy to convert into a bed.
A couple of notes to think about when choosing an RV jackknife sofa:
- It may only be suitable for a child or short adult.
- When folded out, it may be a bit front-heavy, so it must be secured to the floor.

If you’re looking for something a little more stylish, you’ll need to venture outside of the world of RV furniture and into “normal” or residential furniture.
RV furniture is typically both heavier and more expensive than normal furniture. (And, in my opinion, uglier! 😬) And a jackknife sofa is basically just a fancy name for a futon! Here are some lightweight futons that can fit in an RV and are more stylish. Use D-rings anchored to the floor and straps to secure it during travel.

RV Sofa with Storage
I like the idea of having storage in every possible nook and cranny in our travel trailer, but it still has to be practical. Some have drawers underneath, like this one:

I do like how this one lifts up for storage.

This smaller one shows storage in side pockets. Perfect for extra small spaces!

Small RV Recliners
How about replacing the RV couch with recliners? We would love this option for ourselves, but two just won’t fit in our tiny travel trailer.

Trifold RV Sofa
The tri-fold sofa is just another type that you could get that would increase the number of beds.

Couchbed
Another type of sofa that has recently come to my attention is the Couchbed. A memory foam mattress that folds up into a comfy couch.

The style is simple, but if you need your extra often, this is possibly the easiest solution!

RV Sectional Sofa
Another great option is a sectional sofa. These can be sized to whatever size you want them to be, but for a travel trailer sofa, you’ll need a small one like one of these!

There are multiple color options available on Amazon.

RV Ottoman
An RV ottoman might be the right solution (and fit) for your RV. Something like these convertible/multi-purpose RV furniture ottomans are really interesting for a particularly small space.

This “ottoman” folds out into a cot for a hidden bed!

Or you can just find a classic storage ottoman, no hidden sleeping spots! (Except maybe for your pets!)

Sofa Replacement Tips
As I’ve been doing this research, there have been a couple of good recommendations:
- You’ll likely need to secure your RV sofa, so consider how you will do this before you order.
- If you decide to get an RV recliner or a jack knife sofa, when you measure up the space for it, don’t forget to factor in how much room you will need when fully reclined. Consider that it will take up room both in front of and behind the couch.
- How much does your new couch weigh? Add as little weight as possible and ensure that your travel trailer sofa replacement weighs less or equal to the old couch.
- Will it fit through the door of the RV? If you must assemble it yourself, it will probably fit through. But if not, this will be the most important factor to consider!
RV Furniture Outlet Stores
Amazon is one of the best places to buy RV furniture because it will ship to your door and arrive disassembled. No trying to cram a large couch through a small camper door!
Other good options for shopping are RV Furniture Center, Camping World, RecPro (which also conveniently sells on Amazon), PPL Motorhomes, Shop4Seats.com, and Flex Steel.

Depending on the size of your camper, you may find a sleeper sofa, futon, couch, recliner, or convertible ottoman that works best for your travel trailer sofa replacement. Whatever you choose, share it with us in the comments!
I love RVing! I share about our journey around Australia, how we came to do this trip, all the planning involved, and snapshots of what life on the road is like.
I found one on wayfair …look for measurments and what you need to assemble …
Try Ikea. Take your measurements and see what will fit it. We wanted to replace a “click” sofa that had arms and wasn’t even big enough for a child, let alone an adult. We found a sofa without arms that pulled out to a queen sized bed. We had to assemble it inside the camper, lol, but it fit exactly.
Any ideas for replacing a sectional sofa that’s in a fifth wheel?
Nothing in the stores or online will fit the space. Baffled as to whats next!
Ah, it’s a bit of a struggle huh!
If you can’t find one to fit the space, you may need to consider something custom built?
We built our own sofa because at the time I was struggling with finding something in the dimensions we needed that had storage but now I sorta wish we would have just bought a “normal” sofa in a style I loved and skipped the storage because we could probably get rid of the randomness under there anyway, haha. I can definitely see how building custom can be the best option when you’re super limited on space though.
It’s like a never ending learning process, huh!
Even though we’ve got next to no storage space, we’ve still got random-ness under our couch too.. all because it’s too hard to get to.
I want to replace the sofa in my trailer so bad! I want reclining chairs since they are so much more comfortable and I don’t need the sleeping space — and you can always sleep in the chairs.
Yes, I’m all for the recliner too!
@Ava, We bought a love seat with two reclining seats. Love it. Comfy and recline nearly flat so you can sleep on them. We found it on sale at LazeeBoy.
