7 Ways to Make Your RV Interior Look Bigger

Even though RVs are small, there are some simple tricks that you can use to make the RV interior look bigger. If your small space feels cluttered and dark, these tips will brighten your space and make it appear larger—without actually adding any square footage.

If you’re renovating your RV (all the cool kids are doing it), keep these tips in mind as you work on your renovation.

These seven proven strategies will make your RV interior look and feel bigger, giving the illusion of more space for you to enjoy.

We’ll start with the hardest strategy to follow!

1. Downsize!

Being in an RV forces you to downsize your possessions naturally. You just can’t fit as much stuff in an RV as you would fit into your house.

When my husband moved into our RV, I was at work. His things alone filled every single cabinet! (And guess who had all of our pots and pans and dishes?)

Whether you’re jumping into full-time travel like we were or using your RV as a vacation home, keep your stuff to a minimum. Pack only the essentials and know you’ll accrue plenty of new things along the way.

It’s amazing how spacious and big an RV feels if there is not too much stuff cluttering up the space.

2. White brings in the light.

If you’re a fan of travel trailer renovations like I am, you know that most RV renovators will completely paint the interior of the RV white.

Adding white is the best way to make a room feel brighter and bigger, but it doesn’t have to feel clinical. Add warm tones like wood tables or a leather couch to make the white space still feel welcoming.

It doesn’t have to be all white, though. Any light colors will open up the room and make it feel like you have more space.

And you can (and probably should) soften the white’s starkness with complimentary colors or textures on different surfaces.

3. Mirrors will expand the RV interior.

It’s an old interior decorator’s trick to use mirrors on the wall to give the illusion of depth to a room.

There typically isn’t too much free wall space in an RV, but you can always hang a full-length mirror on a doorway, add a reflective backsplash, or hang a mirror in your entryway.

4. Opt for minimal window treatments.

Nothing makes a room feel quite as spacious as large windows.

In an RV, we’re limited to whatever windows are in place and there is no changing that. But you can remove the existing window treatments to allow for more light to come in.

Many RVs have a patterned valance around the windows, plus blinds, curtains, or drapes. It can be too much!

Not only do all these window treatments cover some of the actual windows, but they also make the walls look more cluttered. Remove them and opt for something minimal instead, like roller shades or light curtains.

5. Don’t overcrowd the walls

Keep your walls only lightly decorated. You can hang items on the walls, but just don’t overcrowd them.

Once you consider the windows, overhead cabinets, and furniture in an RV, you’ll see that there isn’t much open wall space anyway. Keep them uncluttered to make the space feel more calm and spacious.

6. Let there be light.

When the corners of a room are a bit darker than the rest of the room, it can make the room feel smaller. Try to light up any dark corners with a table lamp, floor lights, or downlighting.

In an RV, everything needs to have a place, especially on a travel day. By having well-organized storage systems in all your kitchen cabinets & drawers, cupboards, and closets, you’ll know exactly where things should go.

This will help you to keep your RV tidy and uncluttered.
