Are you dreaming of a campervan that easily gets you to your favorite outdoor locations, that is customized for you, and doesn’t need gasoline, propane, or diesel? Meet Grounded RVs.

Started in 2022, Grounded is building the next generation of electric-only campervans and trailers. Based on the GM BrightDrop Zevo 600 platform, with a 250-mile range, the Grounded G2 can take you far.

Here’s everything you want to know about this new electric campervan.

Getting Power

The G2 has three different power sources: the 173kWh high-voltage vehicle battery bank, the 10kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate house battery, and the 640W solar panel.

  • The vehicle battery is the engine of the van. Just like any other EV, it’s what propels the van down the road (or up the mountain and over the stream to Grandma’s house).
  • The house battery is the 12v power for everything from lights to 12v accessories. The G2 comes with an inverter, which changes the 12vDC electricity from the battery into 120vAC electricity to power the outlets. So the house battery powers pretty much everything inside the van.
  • The solar panel on the G2 works with the house battery to keep all your appliances inside running.

When you need to charge the G2’s vehicle battery, you have a few options. The battery bank can be charged from a standard 120v outlet, an at-home EV charger, or at the Level 3 DC charging stations that have popped up around the country over the past years. There is also a 50 amp adapter that you can use if you’re at a campground with 50 amp availability.

The house battery can be charged from shore power or by the vehicle battery, and is kept topped off by the solar panel.

Since the roof of the G2 is relatively small, there isn’t enough space for a solar set up that would quickly power everything in the G2 plus the vehicle battery bank. However given enough time and sun exposure, it can charge the vehicle battery bank as well as keep the house battery charged up. It’s truly a self-sustaining system, allowing you to explore all you want.

Manageable Size

With an overall length of just 24’, the G2 is easily maneuverable in the city, and finding camping spots is a breeze. Looking a bit like a delivery van (FedEx is using this same platform for some of their newest vehicles), the G2 has a spacious interior (75.2″ at widest point, 158″ long) and a high ceiling (78.5″ at tallest point), so you’ll have plenty of room to maneuver inside as well: 615 cubic feet of space, to be exact.

The G2 has all-wheel drive, so rough terrain will not prevent you from finding that one great boondocking location.

Modular Layout Options

Many vans currently on the market offer one or two options for layouts, leaving you to adjust your lifestyle to someone else’s design.

Grounded’s modular design concept allows you to choose individual modules and create the layout that works for you.

Do you want seating for up to seven or more storage space? Do you need a fold-out desk for your laptop? Want two twin beds or a single queen? The choices are up to you. Grounded has a whole library of modules to choose from.

However, their customers’ options don’t end there. If a request for a custom module is made, Grounded does its best to make it happen, and then it adds that to its library for future customers.

Some options in the library are:

  • a queen-sized bed
  • bench seating with flip-up table
  • a kitchen with fridge/freezer, sink, and induction stove
  • a large garage space
  • under-seat storage
  • overhead storage
  • an outdoor shower
  • indoor wetroom with a dry-flush toilet

Game changers

Another way Grounded is changing the game is via its retrofit service. If your needs change over time, so can your layout.

The retrofit service allows you to rearrange, add, or remove modules. Want to add that dry-flush toilet or need more storage space? It can happen—and in much less time than a completely customized van.

Because they use the module format, Grounded is able to build custom vans much more quickly than many other bespoke van companies. Whereas a fully custom van can take a year to manufacture and needs even more time to get to the top of the manufacturing queue, Grounded’s standard turn-around time is 90 days from final order to van delivery.

Plus, every G2 has an option to add a Starlink High Performance Disc for Internet access no matter where you find yourself.

Grounded CEO Sam Shapiro, a former SpaceX senior software engineer, worked on Starlink before starting Grounded. He says that when he started his own van living life, he had to rely on his phone and being within reach of a cell tower. Which is a hit-or-miss proposition and limits where you can go, especially if your work is reliant on Internet access.

The Starlink disc is low-profile and attaches to the G2’s roof, so there’s no need to set up an external antenna when you find your stopping location.

Lastly, Grounded has an app (Grounded+ App) which allows you to monitor your energy usage, check on your water and battery levels, and even turn appliances on and off. It also helps to diagnose issues that may come up. Sort of like having a butler and digital mechanic in one app.

How Much Does a Custom Electric Campervan Cost?

The G2 is in line with other custom van prices at $195,000. But those vans are still gasoline-based, and have a long lead time.

Grounded is the first electric-only van builder in this market and is quickly making headroads into what is currently a niche area but will undoubtedly expand to become a normal option.

With an easy $100 deposit you can get on Grounded’s queue and be boondocking within months!
